Разведчик становится известен миру только тогда, когда его постигает крупная неудача. Пожалуй, то же самое можно сказать о разведке. Эта организация по своей природе должна видеть и слышать всё, оставаясь сама невидимой.

Асы США пилоты F4U «Corsair»

Первый прототип XF4U-I поднялся в воздух 29.мая 1940 г., решение о серийном производстве новых истребителей было принято 29 мая 1940 г. На самолет был установлен самый крупногабаритный и самый мощный на тот момент звездообразный двигатель воздушного охлаждения Пратт-энд-Уитни R-2800. Огромный мотор требовал соответствующего воздушного винта: пропеллер самолета XF4U-1 имел самый большой среди одномоторных самолетов диаметр. Большой диаметр породил проблему клиренса. Чтобы не делать чрезмерно длинные стойки основных опор шасси инженеры фирмы Чэнс-Воут предложили установить опоры в изломах крыла типа «обратная чайка». За счет использования весьма необычного крыла истребитель приобрел неповторимый силуэт.

Неизвестный Лавочкин

Легендарные самолеты Героя Социалистического Труда С.А. Лавочкина по праву считаются одним из символов Победы. Хотя его первенец ЛаГГ-3 оказался откровенно неудачным, «заслужив» прозвище «лакированный гарантированный гроб», установка нового мотора и усовершенствование конструкции буквально преобразили эту тяжелую неповоротливую машину, превратив в лучший истребитель Великой Отечественной – прославленные Ла-5, Ла-5ФН и Ла-7 сначала перехватили у немцев господство в воздухе, а затем и сломали хребет Люфтваффе. Именно на этих самолетах воевали двое из пяти лучших советских асов, а Иван Кожедуб первым сбил новейший реактивный Me.262. Именно Лавочкин стоял у истоков советской реактивной авиации – это его истребители первыми преодолели сверхзвуковой, а межконтинентальная крылатая ракета «Буря» – и тепловой барьер. Это в его ОКБ были созданы и первые отечественные беспилотники, и зенитные управляемые ракеты, прикрывавшие Москву в разгар холодной войны.

Прорывая завесу тотальной секретности, многие десятилетия окружавшую проекты Лавочкина, эта книга по крупицам восстанавливает творческую биографию великого авиаконструктора и подлинную историю его авиашедевров.
